Walk In... Dance Out!

So what is Ceroc?

Ceroc (pronounced 'say-rock') is one of the fastest growing dance phenomenon in the world. Ceroc is dynamic blend of JIVE, SALSA, BALLROOM, and ROCK ‘N' ROLL and is easy to learn, sociable and fun.

Ceroc is a funky partner dance generally done to Top 40 and Nightclub music (you can do it to anything with a good beat).

A Ceroc evening provides a great way to meet people, have a laugh and keep fit. There is no need to bring a partner with you and there is no set weekly or monthly course. You can just turn up to whatever venue you like, as and when you like.

During the Second World War, American GIs based in France introduced Jive to the dance scene. The French, being French, adapted it and described it as "c'est roc", hence the abbreviated, Ceroc. In the early 1980s a Frenchman named James Cronin started classes in London which are now enormously successful.

Angelique Meyer, living in London at the time, trained to teach and decided it was just what New Zealand needed. Today, there are branches through out New Zealand .

What dance experience do I need?

None whatsoever! We warmly welcome people with no previous dance experience. Classes are designed to be easy and fun to learn, you just need a willingness to have fun.

If you are someone with dance experience please try a beginner's class first, speak to your teacher before the class so they can assess you during the class. At the end of the class they will be able to tell you when you should move to Intermediate.

What time should I turn up?

The evening starts with a beginner's class which lasts 60 min before a 15 – 20 min freestyle break.

The Intermediate Class starts after the freestyle break and is taught for those who have a grasp of the basic moves and are ready to learn the more challenging moves. To round the evening off, the freestyle section kicks in, the DJ plays some great music and you are free to dance with anyone you care to ask.

Remember, it is perfectly acceptable for ladies to ask men to dance as well as vice versa. This is your chance to practice your moves and develop your style. Why not ask the teacher to dance?

You should arrive about 15 minutes before the start of your class.

When can I start? Do I need to book in advance?

At Ceroc Upper Harbour , Rodney South, you can start any beginner's class any week.

In the beginners classes a new routine is taught in each class each night, so you can do more than one each week if you would like to. No harm is done if you miss a week either.

There will always be a number of people there for the first time and so we always run a complete beginners class. You can just turn up as and when you like. Our Crew will be there to meet you.

Do you have to bring a partner?

No, although you are welcome to bring a partner, we swap everyone around during class. This means that there is no need for even numbers.

Hopefully by the end of the evening you should have danced with the majority of people in the room and have even made some new friends.

What do I wear to class?

Anything goes! Some people dress casual: jeans, Tee-shirt and others dress up to go out after class. You will get hot so wear something cool or have a layer you can take off.

As for shoes, wear something that will allow you to move freely on the dance floor, such as leather-soled shoes or smooth-soled trainers. However, wearing deodorant is always a plus!

If in doubt about your shoes, ask the staff

or bring along a spare pair.

  How do classes work?

We start with a gentle warm-up. Then we get you to partner up. We will teach you one 'move' at a time, putting music on for you to practice. Generally you will learn three to four moves in a beginner's class.

  What are beginner moves?

There are a group of 22 beginner's moves which make up the basis for Ceroc dancing. Most intermediate moves are extended variations of the beginner's moves.

The more confident you become with these "base moves", the easier you will find all the rest of the moves in Ceroc.

Why is there a break between the beginners and the intermediate class?

This is called freestyle and allows you the opportunity to practice some of the moves you've just been taught. If you can pluck up the courage, you could also go and ask some of the other people for a dance. The break is about 15 - 20 minutes long.

  What is freestyle?

Freestyle is where we play music for you and other dancers to enjoy dancing the moves you have learnt in the evening or at any other class you have attended.

Our Taxi Dancers are still available to dance with during this session. Please ask them, other Crew Members or any other member of the class to dance.

We play all sorts of music during our freestyle sessions, ranging from 1940's and 50's to the current pop / chart songs. If you have a particular request, ask the teacher / DJ

  How much does it cost?

The cost for the whole evening will be $15.00 Cash or Cheque ($10 for students with ID)

  Guarantee

If it's not for you on your first night, I will give you your money back.

  Are Ceroc teachers qualified?

All Ceroc teachers must go through a training course before becoming fully qualified. Teachers must also attend update courses where they will learn that year's new moves.

Our teachers are reassessed periodically to ensure that the high standards and quality are continually met.

Ceroc is a great way to meet new people, keep fit, meet new friends and develop new skills.

Come along and see what we mean!
